I used Corian to make the nut of my electric ukulele in last year's Build Challenge.

Once the note is fretted the nut is out of the sonic picture.. Indirectly, the nut also influences the overall tone of a guitar because the nut transfers the vibrations of the strings to the neck, so the material and density are crucial. As for sound transfer, I don’t think that the nut has all that much impact on the sound of a guitar.
