Corbelled house. A South African Karoo corbelled house. These stock farmers migrated from the south into the Karoo in the early 1800’s, to discover that trees where sparse and rocks aplenty. Dinner is also available. We had to go to the dentist and had a problem with our vehicle.

Our unique Corbelled House, build in the late 1700s is one of only 40 well preserved Corbelled Houses in South Africa. 1 of 12 This is the first farmhouse that was built in the 1830s on the farm Osfontein,a unique experience!
The house is equipped either for self catering or on a "bed & breakfast" basis. Two furnished with double beds and the other room with two single beds. Candles are used for lighting so that visitors can have a true 1800 experience. Eventually several corbelled huts would link to form a dwelling.
Corbelled houses appear only in the Karoo in an attractive small area. It is also historically significant, built by early trekboers (migrant stock farmers) in the early 1800s as dwellings and granaries, as there was little or no access to wood other than the odd Acacia tree and clumps of bush. ACT and UKZN took up the challenge and travelled to the Northern Cape to document nine corbelled houses using 3D laser scanning. You can arrive in time for lunch at Williston Mall, after wander ing around the recycled art, the little bookshop and curio.
